Did you know February is Bake for Family Fun Month? Although you may not be related to those in your care, they likely think of you as family. Take this opportunity to get your kids involved in the kitchen! Kids can help out in the kitchen as early as 2 years old. Our partners at the Home Baking Association outline age-appropriate kitchen tasks.Â
2 Years OldÂ
- Proper hand washingÂ
- Wipe table topsÂ
- Play with safe utensilsÂ
- Scrub, wash, rear, snap, break into piecesÂ
- Move pre-measured ingredients from one place to anotherÂ
- Add ingredients to a bowlÂ
3 Years OldÂ
- All of the aboveÂ
- Handle dough, begin kneading, simple shapingÂ
- Pour cool liquids into mixtureÂ
- Mix dry ingredients with wire whisk or spoon in extra large bowlÂ
- Shake liquidsÂ
- Spread softs spreadsÂ
- Place things in trashÂ
4 Year OldsÂ
- All of the aboveÂ
- Peel loose skinned oranges or hard cooked eggsÂ
- Form round shapes with doughÂ
- Mash fruits or cooked vegetablesÂ
- Cut with dull scissorsÂ
- Set tableÂ
5 to 6 Year OldsÂ
- All of the aboveÂ
- Help measure dry ingredients (stir, spoon, level)Â
- Cut with a blunt knife (plastic or tableware)Â
- Use a hand held egg beater or whiskÂ
- Crush crackers in a bag with a rolling pinÂ
- Sprinkle ingredients on top of foodÂ
6 to 8 Years OldÂ
- All of the aboveÂ
- Clean surfaces before and afterÂ
- Wash fruits and/or vegetablesÂ
- Gather ingredients and equipmentÂ
- Grease or spray baking pansÂ
- Measure dry ingredientsÂ
- Measure liquid ingredientsÂ
- Add measured dry and liquid ingredients into mixing bowlÂ
- Learn to crack eggsÂ
- Cut fruit, butter or margarine sticks on cutting board (plastic or table knife)Â
- Push buttons on blender, processors with adultÂ
- Knead doughÂ
- Prehead oven (adults help load products in hot oven)Â
- Wash dishes, put away ingredients or utensilsÂ
9 to 12 Year OldsÂ
- All of the aboveÂ
- Learn safe knife skills (chopping, dicing, and cutting)Â
- Handle food equipment safelyÂ
- Place oven racks and load oven (while oven is cold)Â
- Safe operation of electric equipment (mixer, microwave, bread machine, food processor, etc)Â
- Follow a recipe (measure accurately, prepare a product)Â
- Read ingredients and food labelsÂ
- Safely handle/store ingredients and finished productsÂ
- Plan and prepare simple meals and snacksÂ
- Clean up (how and what to wash in dishwasher or by hand)Â
13 Year Olds and UpÂ
- All of the aboveÂ
- Tasks requiring multiple preparation steps or close timingÂ
- Create new flavor combinations, shapes, or decorationÂ
- Plan and prepare whole menus for mealsÂ
- Help younger children learn about food and how to prepareÂ
