Meal Pattern Minute: Serving Store-Bought Hummus
December 8, 2022
Hummus is a dip made from garbanzo beans, sometimes known as chickpeas, and a great option to serve as a meat/meat alternate in the Child and Adult Care Food Program meal pattern. Beans are a good source of fiber and protein to help build a healthy body. You can serve hummus as a dip and pair it with pita bread or vegetable sticks for a snack. Hummus can also be used as a spread in sandwiches or on crackers. There are so many ways to include hummus in your meals, but how much do you need to serve to be creditable in the CACFP meal pattern?
Well, it only takes a minute to find out! Listen to our nutrition education specialist, Isabel Ramos-Lebron, to learn more on what information you need in order to credit hummus in the CACFP.
After you’ve watched the video, here are some additional resources on crediting hummus, which you can find in the Meat/Meat Alternates section of the Crediting Handbook for CACFP.
- “The volume of meat alternate, such as beans, in each serving may credit toward the meats/meat alternates component. See the Meats/Meat Alternates section in the Food Buying Guide. Document the meal pattern contribution with a standardized recipe or a Product Formulation Statement.”
- If you need to send the Product Formulation Statement to a manufacturer or foodservice company, you can obtain a copy by visiting the USDA Food Manufacturers/Industry webpage and click on PFS for Documenting Meats/Meat Alternates.
